"as years have melted away, my original album of verdi's aida on 78 rpm, columbia, the enjoyment also waned. scratches, humming, and audio noise reduced the playtime down to semi-annual listening. now, comes this c.d. and its wonderful, true sound. arangi-lombardi,maria capuano, and baccaloni, all worthy of the popularity of this album in italy for over seventy years! but, to be honest, it is aroldo lindi as radames which makes this a treasure for me.this was his only complete opera recording, but enough to bring back the hippodrome in new york and the boston opera house for my fading memory...."

"After all the recordings of Aida I possess and it must be 20 of them live and studio, this one stands out for the vocal mastery of the soprano and the conducting. No tone is too soft or too loud; too low or too high. All of her colleagues agreed that hers was THE perfect vocal execution. Her tone of voice is interesting and for the current crop of people who need comparisons; it is a voice with a middle range and trill like Marian Anderson, tonal fullness of Martina Arroyo or a current soprano Angela Brown, the legato, high C and vocal control of a Leontyne Price. Do you get the idea?

Her pianissimi are distinctly her own, they are NOT mezze voci but firm piani produced with the strenth of a forte tone.

It is not the most exciting Aida, for that we have Caniglia, Cigna, and Mancini or the Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, but the whole production is even, with a ringing tenor and firm mezzo.

That interesting conductor, Molajoli, is one of my favorite, but who is he? In the annals of opera houses he can't be found, yet he must exist because his conducting of Verdi is unique and some of THE GREATEST I have heard. His Trovatore is awesome among the many other operas and scenes he recorded!

All in all, you will not find a more solid Aida than Arangi-Lombardi or a more masterly production of Aida.

I suggest this Aida firmly!

Only four stars because of sound and Lindi highs....

"

However, if one had to have only one recording of Aida, this would be the one. Arangi-Lombardi's messa di voce alone is worth the price. I cannot recommend this CD too highly and I have a lot of them and Callas is one of my great favorites. And, yes, her voice is fatter, but this soprano is so absolutely glorious. Anyone who wants to have a great Aida needs to have this recording."
