The fifth collection culled from the annual VH1 Divas specials is a little too genteel. Maybe because the producers are now old hands at pairing up pop's biggest female singers, and they know how to avoid potential fireworks. But it's the fireworks that make these records sizzle. Who can forget Elton John's rendition of "The Bitch Is Back" on the 1999 edition? Except for the rendition of AC/DC's "You Shook Me," inexplicably assigned to Celine Dion and disco revivalist Anastacia, which features blistering guitar by Meredith ("Bitch") Brooks, none of the cuts crackle. Cher's dance floor hit "I Believe" sounds canned and forced, and Latin firecracker Shakira goes low-key with an acoustic version of her soft-focus "Underneath Your Clothes." Even the vivacious Dixie Chicks can't rescue the record with their performance of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," complete with Stevie Nicks. --Jaan Uhelszki

CD Reviews

Only 50% of the concert is included, but its still great!!!!

"Having attended this Grand event I was one of the many people that impatiently awaited for the release of this album. Needless to say is that this event was edited and very good performances were not included in this CD which is the only downside, in the original concert on May 23, 2002 the headliners were: Celine Dion, Cher, Shakira, Mary J. Blige and the Dixie Chicks and the special guests were Anastacia (who back then was basically
"unknown" in the USA), Stevie Nicks, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper and Ellen Degeneres as the Host. Half of the performances were not included which is a shame. The best was left on the CD though, jaw dropping performances by Celine Dion, Cher was just great, Anastacia can definitely sing and Shakira, well, she rocked!!! :::SONG BY SONG:::1. Celine Dion with Anastacia "You shook me all night long":
¡GREAT! said to be the best song on the album, definitely something new for Celine, and surprisingly.....SHE CAN SING ROCK TOO!:::THIS SONG ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE::::2. Cher "Believe":
Good but same as usual, half playback, half live.3. Cher "(This is) a song for the lonely":
Great Dance song, well sung, definitely the "dance moment" of the evening.4. Shakira "Underneath your clothes":
Beautiful performance, great vocals and you get to listen to Shakira playing the harmonica like never before.5. Dixie Chicks with Stevie Nicks "Landslide"
Perfect! you can barely hear Stevie Nicks but vocals from the Dixie Chicks more than make up for it, slow and relaxing.6. Anastacia "One day in your life"
A great anthem, this girl CAN sing and is definitely worthy of Diva status.7. Celine Dion "I'm alive":
Like they say, the BEST for last. Celine Dion once again delivers a performance like no one else can, and like the title says "She's alive!!!".8. Celine Dion "A new day has come":
Great upbeat ballad, with superb vocals and great musical arrangements. Celine may not think herself as a Diva but she can certainly sing like one.9. Elvis Medley Finale:
Anastacia, Jailhouse Rock: good vocals and rythm.
Shakira, Always on my mind: New, distinctive and great to listen to.Cher, Heartbreak Hotel: Great performance.Celine Dion, Can't help falling in love: She took the show, saved the Finale and proved once again that when it comes to live performances, no one can beat her. Great finale, will leave you wanting more.DEFINITELY WORTH YOUR MONEY:)"
THE DIVAS RETURN

"At last VH1 have bought out a new Divas CD!! The concert itself was great with nine of the top divas in the world today. The CD does miss off some of the good songs like
"If I Could Turn Back Time" by Cher & Cyndi Lauper
"Rainy Dayz" by Mary J. Blige & Whitney Houston
and "Love Is A Battlefield" by Mary J. Blige & Shakira but the best divas are left on it."You Shook Me All Night Long" is without a doubt the best song on the CD with pounding vocals by Céline Dion and Anastacia, an unlikely pairing with an unlikely song but it is still great!!"Believe" keeps the dance mood going and is another great song for the CD, this version of "Believe" is so much better than the one she sung at VH1 Divas '99."This Is A Song For The Lonely" another great song by the legendary diva, probably the second best song on the CD."Underneath Your Clothes" this is ok but I was a little disappointed that Shakira chose to sing this song instead of "Whenever, Wherever" which would have been a lot better."Landslide" not the best song ever but I love Stevie Nicks so it's great!"One Day In Your Life" great great great. Anastacia was one of the best performers on the show and this song proves it."I'm Alive" I love this song and I think the best voice in the business, Céline Dion, sung it superbly."A New Day Has Come" a bit like Shakira, I was a little disappointed that Céline sung this song instead of one of her hits like "Think Twice" but it is still a great version. The Elvis tribute is last and although "Jailhouse Rock" "Always On My Mind" "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" are all great where is "Wear My Ring" by Stevie Nicks??? All four divas sung their respective songs perfectly but I am still confused as to why Stevie Nicks' song was left off.A great CD and i'm just hoping next years Divas will be as good. Tina Turner, Cher, Céline Dion, Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks, Anastacia, Shakira and Whitney Houston would make the ultimate divas!!"
A GREAT CD WITH GREAT DIVAS

"This CD is great, it has it's flaws but it still contains some great music.
Firstly you've got Cher, without a doubt one of the best of all time, performing her international dance hit "Believe" which set the standard for the other divas. She also performed "(This Is) A Song For The Lonely", another great song.Celine Dion probably had the best song of the night alongside Anastacia, covering AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long", the CD is worth buying just for this track! She also belts out her two newest hits at the time "A New Day Has Come" and "I'm Alive".Anastacia also performs her hit "One Day In Your Life" which is simply wonderful. Then you've got the Dixie Chicks' duet with the sensational Stevie Nicks. It was performed the country way, which is the best way in my opinion and Stevie's soothing vocals suit well with the Dixie Chicks'Shakira was probably the least entertaining performance on the CD. Although her song "Underneath You Clothes" is good, you can't help but wonder what happened to "Whenever, Wherever"!Then theres the Elvis finale, Celine's performance of "Can't Help Falling In Love" is fantastic but doesn't hold a candle to Anastacia's "Jailhouse Rock"! Cher and Shakira also belt out great version's of "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Always On My Mind"! Cher's Elvis wig is also a highlight! There are some problems with this CD/DVD though. First of all where the hell is Mary J? Her rendition of "No More Drama" isn't missed but without a doubt one of the best moments of the night is when she performed "Rainy Dayz" with Whitney Houston, who got a huge ovation with her surprise appearence.
Then theres the rest of the Dixie Chicks' songs! "Long Time Gone", "Wide Open Spaces" and thier version of "That's Alright Mama" are greatly missed. Also Stevie Nicks' version of "Wear My Ring" from the Elvis tribute was one of the best songs of the night and is missing. But the performance that is most missed is the duet between Cher and Cyndi Lauper, together they gave the best song of the night, singing Cher's classic "If I Could Turn Back Time".Despite the flaws, this CD/DVD is still worth buying!"
