This single-CD has nine selections apiece from two of the earliest and finest Western swing bands. Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies was the first group in the idiom to record and it could actually hold its own against most jazz bands of the time despite not having any horns. Brown's cheerful and easy-to-understand vocals were always enjoyable and his group included such fine players as violinist Cecil Brower, pianist Fred "Papa" Calhoun and banjoist Ocie Stockard; "Brownie's Stomp," "Where You Been So Long, Corrine" and "Just Sitting on Top of the World" are highlights. The other band on this CD, Bill Boyd's Cowboy Ramblers, ranged from a quartet to a sextet and benefitted greatly from the contributions of Boyd on guitar, violinist Art Davis (who doubled on mandolin) and the vocals of several bandmembers. But actually the highpoint of their nine songs are two stirring instrumentals: "Under the Double Eagle" and "The Train Song."
