A Good Intro to British Folk

"While it's not as traditional as I had hoped, "Troubadours of British Folk: Vol. 1" is nonetheless a good introduction to the genre. The recordings span from the 50's, starting with the original recordings of "Rock Island Line" (which Johnny Cash later made famous) and "Dirty Old Town" (covered by The Pogues), up to the mid-70's(?). The excellent Shirley & Dolly Collins track is an interesting (and I believe rare) version of "Rambleaway", featuring Christopher Hogwood on the harpsichord. I found the songs by The Fairport Convention, Bert Jansch, & Anne Briggs to be standouts as well. Even though a few get a bit too hippy-dippy for my liking, this is overall a good solid compilation."
