"I know for a fact that there would not be rock & roll in America ... without Muddy Waters." Truer words are seldom spoken--but it's blues musicians who turn out to pay tribute to the Master on this album, whether they're old-timers like Buddy Guy and Koko Taylor, or relative newcomers like Mem Shannon or Waters's own son, Bill Morganfield. Generally speaking, tribute albums are destined to fall short, because no matter how good a musician is, he's not going to play the song exactly like the original, nor should he try to. But as far as honoring the blues giant, A Tribute to Muddy Waters lives up to its name. Keb' Mo's take on "I Can't Be Satisfied" comes awfully close to Waters's, while Guy's "She's Nineteen Years Old" and Taylor's "Long Distance Call" are just as good as one would expect from these two Chicago greats. Shannon adapts "Gypsy Woman" to his own New Orleans style, and the late Robert Lockwood Jr. provides a laid-back, easy version of "Mean Red Spider." An important highlight is Morganfield's "Hoochie Coochie Man"; at times, the son of Muddy Waters sounds so much like his father, it's eerie. Overall it's a fitting honorarium to a man without whom the blues as we hear it today would not exist. --Genevieve Williams

Sail On! A Heart-felt Homage to Blues Titan
06/18/1999
(3 out of 5 stars)

"You can't pay too many tributes to a legend like Muddy Waters - if the goal is to ensure proper respect for the man and his legacy- so this fine project (from a recent PBS TV special) is welcome for neophytes and long-time fans alike. It represents at least the third such tribute release of this decade, but with minimal overlapping of the cast of characters. Sure, most listeners probably don't need to hear Muddy classics as rendered by the likes of Nick Gravenites and John Hiatt, but a tribute like this succeeds in spotlighting the legacy of Muddy Waters. A balance here is achieved by including Muddy's contemporaries and disciples like Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, and Robert Jr. Lockwood, as well as his former bandmates, but also newcomers like New Orleans cabbie-turned-bluesman Mem Shannon and blues/folk popster Keb Mo. Besides hearing from the man himself, most encouraging is the arrival of his son, Big Bill Morganfield, who also has a solo debut "Rising Son" now out on Blind Pig Records. But for the beginner, why not go straight to the source and buy "The Best of Muddy Waters" or one of the two volumes of "His Best," all on Chess/ MCA Records? In the meanwhile, don't miss the occasional tours of the still excellent Muddy Waters Tribute Band (usually featuring alums like Pinetop Perkins, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, Bob Margolin, Jerry Portnoy, Calvin Jones and Willie Smith) when and if they come to your region..."
