Synopsis

In just a few decades, New York-based and Jamaican-owned VP Records has grown from a Kingston shack peddling vinyl 45s--a fabled early reggae institution--into North America's largest reggae label-distributors, with a direct pipeline to the latest tunes raising "booyaka" shouts from Jamaica's dancehall floors. Fans count on the Reggae Gold, Strictly the Best, and Total Togetherness series as the next best things to being there. Artists also clamor to be included, hence the consistent quality of these selections. With the exceptions of Beenie Man, Sizzla, and Vegas--top draws whose tracks in this set will set up a craving for more--most reggae artists still make better singles than albums. So what we have here is a reggae sampler for listeners to pick and choose from. Alley Cat will rock you on "Dirty Speech," but you may not want 15 tracks from this rather derivative MC. On the other hand, Beenie's rousing "Gospel Time"--complete with fevered lines like "shake that booty that Jesus gave you / everybody haffe know / who Jesus is" and a multitudinous church chorus--could be the start of your Beenie collection. -- Elena Oumano
