CD Reviews

There are a few groovy songs here, but really not enough
Lawrance M. Bernabo | The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota | 11/05/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Forget about the hyperbolic title, which is pretty standard for every hit collection out there, and just look over the list of the twenty tracks put together for "Top Hits of the Sixties: Groovy Hits." There are a few tracks are truly classic hits from the decade--"My Guy" by Mary Wells, "My Girl" by the Temptations, "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Gladys Knight and the Pipes--but you should already have those in your music library, especially if they really are groovy songs. There are also a few songs you probably have never heard of before, such as "The Boll Weevil Song" by Brook Benton and Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor" by Lonnie Donegan. However, given the idea that the goal with an album like this is to find a half-dozen tracks that you do not have and would like to add to your collection. You should already have Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" and "I Can't Help Myself" by the Four Tops, but what about Louis Armstrong's "Hello Dolly!" and "The Stripper" by David Rose? Plus there is the classic "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini," which has got to be one of the most cherished songs from childhood if you actually grew up way back when. The good news is that there are 20 tracks, which is twice as many as a lot of other collections of Sixties music, but it is still going to be a close call as to whether you are going to find enough here of interest. Having tracks by the Cowsills, the Sensations, and some of these other artists does not tip the odds in your favor."
