""The Sounds of Christmas 2009" is a joyful, diverse, tasty holiday cookie with urban edges but plenty of sugar. There are some hip-hoppish offerings, sweet ballads, novelties, and even some quality contributions from some A-list artists (Huey Lewis, Stephen Bishop, Richard Marx, Dennis DeYoung, etc) making this a real treat.

A throwback to the Christmas compilation records of the 60s from the old-school major record labels on which the company's stable of artists were rounded up in one big happy corral, The Sounds of Christmas 2009 gives us everything from new takes on Christmas classics to rare finds.

For example, Huey Lewis and the News chime in with a terrific a capella take on "Winter Wonderland" that heretofore was only available to fan club members 25 years ago. DeYoung, the former Styx lead singer, brings us "When I Hear a Christmas Song," with his typical emotional flair. Some, including a few of his former Styx mates, call Dennis's ballads sappy, but this one is undeniably catchy.

Stephen Bishop's exclusive version of his original "Rock Little Reindeer" is a nice reminder of just how much I miss hearing Bishop's contribution to the popular music scene. One of American's truly underrated singer-songwriters, Bishop's presence on this CD is perhaps the record's biggest gift to listeners. At least yours truly.

But the show stopper on this CD, the real star in this sky, is Annie Pattison's "Love for Christmas." The young Canadian singing sensation has talent and heart and I suspect it will only be a matter of time before she heads south from the Great White North and conquers America. If Annie's song doesn't get you a little misty, well, why are you even listening to a Christmas CD?"
Hidden Christmas Gem!

"We all love Christmas music. But you gotta admit that we hear the same tunes over and over again every year. No knock to the classics. Sounds of Christmas 2009 is a real break from the usual. And it includes big names like Dennis DeYoung, Huey Lewis, and Richar Marx. I would by the album just for Dennis DeYoung's "When I Hear a Christmas Song" alone. It's a beautifully polished, well-written song and the vocals bring you back to the days of "Babe" that so many loved. One real surprise for me, being a devout Led Zeppelin fan, was "Misty Wonderland Hop" from Hayseed Dixie. Never heard these guys before but that dude singing has pipes! Very cool and imaginative. Lastly, DJ Ice Z Ice and the Fresh Elf's "The Night Before Christmas" is an instant classic! You'll love every line. Buy this music. NOW!!"
