CD Reviews

Classic tracks but Evil Dee is like stratching a blackboard

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD includes the orginal Rawkus 12''s which, in my opinion are some of the best underground hip hop traks to come out in the late nineties. Major highlight include Mos Def's "Universal Magnetic", and Kweli's "2000 Seasons" (my favorite tracks from these guys including anything from Black Star), and Company Flow's "Fire in Which You Burn" and "Lune Tns". It's really a shame, this could have been a seminal compilation were it not for how freakin' annoying Evil Dee is on this CD. Look, I love early Black Moon but someone has got to shut this guy up on this comp. I've rarely heard anything more annoying in my life. You know those pirate Reggae stations were the DJ's can't stop interrupting the songs to "big up" everyone and their mother. Well, this is more annoying. As far as musical content this CD deserves 5 stars, its way better than the second Soundbombing. But Rawkus really screwed up with this Evil Dee nonsense. Luckily they got smart and had J-Rocc and Babu from the Beat Junkies mix the second one. I can only imagine how glorious this CD could have been had it been mixed by Bobitto or Roc Raida, or anyone."
Evil Dee is on the mix !

DJ Evil D, good skills, wrong style for this album

"This album came out at a great time. Reflection Eternal's 2000 Seasons was sure to be a hot (HOT) track, along with their other recently released vinyl single Fortified Live. Co FLow, Mos Def, all of these tracks are definitive of this snippet of time in hiphop. God I had so much anticipation for this album, and roughtly 12 years later I still look at the track list and sigh.

What I couldn't stand about this album is DJ Evil D. Way too many times during the enjoyment of this pretty down-tempo album you get "screeeech scratch scratch" from a record followed by "EVIL D IZ ONNN THA MIXX!" by a shrill, high-pitched voice. Ahh! It's never fitting. He shouts as if he's trying to make a party album. I would still have bought this album to have a good digital copy of RE's 2000 Seasons, but again, the most tranquil, beautiful track on the album gets assaulted within the first 20 seconds with an agonizing "EEEVIL D's ONN THA MIIIX!! WUT!!"

Soundbombing II stepped up the production, expanded the list of MC's, and got 2 "world famous" DJ's who know how to do it.

Sorry Evil D, your mixing is fine, just know when to keep your self-promotion to yourself. Your name's on the cover, there's no need to open your mouth."
