CD Reviews

Uneven at best tribute with a few gems.

"As a lover of Curtis Mayfield I was intrigued by the concept of this album. I was already aware of the high regard and esteem Jamaican musicians placed on the music and artestry of Curtis. In particular Bob Marley's Wailers were heavily influenced by early Mayfield penned songs. So much so in fact that there's a picture of Bunny, Bob and Peter dressed in tuxedo's mimicking a glossy done by the Impressions years earlier. In fact there are two Wailer's cover's on this album. Both show how far above their harmonies and arrangements were over their contemporaries. The finest cut on the album however is Marcia Griffin's cover of "Gypsy Woman" which she rightly changed to "Gypsy Man". This is the final cut on the CD and it just plain BURNS!!! That is what reggae does best but so rarely does, changes an outstanding original and compliments it perfectly instead of lamely. There are three versions of "Minstrel and Queen" and we could really have only used one. Buy this album only if you're trying to complete your collection."
