CD Reviews

An Xmas CD for folks who don't like sappy Xmas CD's.
Scott A Teasley | St. Louis, MO USA | 12/07/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"It's extraordinarily rare to find a holiday CD that is as eclectic and original as the 'My Pal God Holiday Record (Vol. 1).' The songs here cover all of your holiday bases from lonesome Christmas dirges to uptempo pop songs about Hannukah. Stylistically this CD covers a lot of ground as well, which is it's biggest strength, or weakness, depending on your tastes. Country, punk, synth-pop, emo, rock, and folk are all covered on this disc - odds are you will find at least one track everyone will like though most folks probably can't sit through the whole album. A few of the songs aren't enjoyable at all, though they are the minority.Tracks that stand out:
"Merry Christmas" by Silkworm adapts the melody of a Barry Manilow song and shapes into a melacholy theme for the dysfunctional family Christmas."Ha-Ha Hannukah" by The Goblins - A catchy lo-fi garage-pop song detailing the joys of Hannukah. It's slightly tongue in cheek but my Jewish friends love it."In December" by We Regazzi is a funky Prince-esque tune celebrating the romantic at Christmas time."(I was) Drunk (on Christmas)" - Wine Chuggers - This lo-fi country ditty is an instant classic that begs you to sing along. This song is hilariously depressing, if that's even possible. All in all I highly recommend this for anyone seeking holiday escape from the never ending slew of bland, saccharine christmas songs. While not perfect, it certainly stands out as the most original and enjoyable Christmas CD in my collection."
