Synopsis

Obsession features some of the finest flamenco-style pickers, including the enormously popular New Age artist Ottmar Liebert. While Liebert's nuevo flamenco has been called the equivalent of flamenco-lite by critics and the genre's purists, in his drum- and keyboard-supplemented rounded chord progressions there is an easy, accessible charm that appeals to a more mainstream audience. Cast alongside the work of the fiery Jesse Cook, the old-world beauty of Oscar Lopez, and others, Liebert and company offer up a recording of sensual and emotive grace, to be enjoyed as accompaniment to a romantic interlude, a reflective solo bath soak, or as inspiration while stirring paella. The standout is Obsession's opening number, Cook's "Cancion Triste," which sets the scene with its textured, sweeping cinematic beauty and splendidly woebegone cello line. --Paige La Grone

CD Reviews

Wonderfull CD - Guitar music at its best.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a good addition to the Narada's New Flamenco series a long with Gypsy Passion and Gypsy Soul. Track 8 & 11 (Abundance and Tigris Palace) are my favorites, I just can't get enough of those 2 songs, that music is always in my head, the rest of the songs are ok too. I wish that this collection could include Alex Fox, how could Narada miss him on a collection like this? The sound quality is exceptional thanks to the 24-bit mastering, this is even beter than the 20-bit recording in Gypsy Passion and Gypsy Soul and I thought that Gypsy Passion's sound was excellent already. If you like this "Obsession", I'm sure you will like Gypsy Passion too. Just sit back, relax and let the music take you away to an exotic destination !"

"The key to setting your expectations level on this CD rests in the sub-title key-word "ROMANCE". I purchased it expecting something along the, lines of Gypsy Soul, or Gypsy Passion (both HIGHLY recommended, but if had to buy just one, Gypsy Passion is the better one, IMHO). During my first listening I was truck by the fascinatingly melodious first & second tracks ("Cancion Trieste" by Jesee Cook & "Loving You" by Oscar Lopez). This is a wonderful CD, with the rare distinction of all but one, or perhaps two, tracks being top billing songs, rather than "filler" tracks. I do question the "flamenco" billing, although it most certainly is flamenco inspired. Perhaps "nuevo flamenco" would be a better choice characterization. Whatever you wish to call it though, it delivers masterful guitar work, and otherwise great music. What stops me from giving this CD 5 stars are a couple of songs which are a bit too jazzy for MY taste. Noteworthy is the exquisite sound delivered compliments of the 24-bit recording. Worth the bucks."
Just What I've Been Searching For!!!

"I was looking for a romantic latin guitar CD, and this is IT. It will be the perfect accompaniment to my husband's and my Mexican honeymoon. My only "complaint," if you can call it that, and that which kept this cd from earning a "5," is the inclusion of a couple of faster pieces to the mix. The faster pieces are terrific in and of themselves, but I really wanted a CD that was, in its entirety, very slow and sensual. Ah, well. All "romance" isn't slow, if you know what I mean. Ahem! "
