Synopsis

Well-recorded African polyphony is a brilliant experience, offering so much sonic color and rhythmic bustle that it amazes to think the music is also a sort of cultural blueprint. This seamless hour-plus of music from the forest-dwelling Kpelle people comes from a population that straddles three borders (Liberia, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast) and numbers only a million. Their music is densely rhythmic, combining a rather lean array of percussion, vocals, and wood trumpets, all oriented toward music as a narrative art or an art somehow describing cultural traditions. The horn lines, such as they are, play in hockets, where single notes occur in a particular rhythmic pattern, and so too do the voices alternate note length, pitch, articulation, and occurrence to make a busy, crowded environment, one that gets intensified by the drums and percussion. There are pools of calm here, to be sure, but much of the recording is electrifying in its levels of energy and musical complexity. --Andrew Bartlett
