CD Reviews

Fine Motown hits CD--even if incomplete
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 11/09/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Motown # 1s Volume 2 gives us as solid a collection of number 1 Motown hits on a single CD as you're ever gonna get. The quality of the sound is excellent and there is a good variety of numbers here.

More mellow songs include The Temptations doing their hit "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me);" the sweet and passionate "You're All A I Need To Get By" performed by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell and, of course, the "softer" yet heartrending "If I Were Your Woman" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. These songs are crafted with care and the artists sing with all their heart and soul--you'll know it just by listening to it.

There are other songs that have a more "electric" flavor to them that many people will instantly recognize and savor over and over again. We get The Supremes belting out "You Can't Hurry Love;" and "Someday We'll Be Together" by Diana Ross and The Supremes. And how's about that awesome "ABC" by The Jackson 5?

"Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James really rocks the house; and for a more modern twist listen for "On Bended Knee" from Boyz II Men. Awesome!

The liner notes don't give much except song credits and dates each song charted. The "green" packaging replaces the standard jewel case so you won't be getting any booklet with the CD.

Overall, this mighty fine CD gives us excellent Motown tunes that shot to number 1 on the chart and made musical history as they did it. I highly recommend this CD for fans of that Motown sound; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will also enjoy quite a few of the songs on this album."
Motown At Its Second Best

"Most of the time, when it comes to greatest hits record that can reflect an artist, it mostly needs to be improved because there is always something missing. That has been said with hits records that've been released last year from Patti LaBelle, Toni Braxton and Natalie Cole. For the legendary Motown label, they've already proved to have a great sampler of their legendary music a few years ago with Motown #1's. The hits package worked very well at re-introducing some of the most classic music ever released from acts like The Jackson 5, Boyz II Men, and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Now, a sequel to Motown #1's has been issued, but does it shine well to fans, or does it need more for music lovers to shop around?

The 2007 Motown #1's Volume 2, follows up one of the most dynamic greatest hits compilations within the past few years. The single dsc reflection like before spans four decade of pure Motown classic that have remained as defiant and delightful for all music lovers. The collection has been remnastered well and sound just as delightful as it was released years ago. The collection includes great classics like Smokey Robinson & The Miracles I Second That Emotion, Diana Ross's upbeat and funky Upside Down, The Jackson 5's classic ABC, Lionel Richie's 80's party anthem All Night Long, as well as recent classics like Boyz II Men's On Bended Knee from their 1994 landmark II. The record includes some of the most romantic love songs like Just My Imagination from The Temptations, Signed, Sealed Delivered from Stevie Wonder and many other greats. The collection sounds great, but sadly there are a few great songs that could've been added from Johnny Gill, as well as other greats.

All in all, Motown #1's Volune 2, is a great addition for any die hard fan of soul music. The record compliments the classic 2004 Motown #1's very well, and is a absolutely wonderful record. I really love the classic soul music that people aren't listening too as much these days, where many of the record buyers are more into Rap & Hip Hop. If you haven't heard any of these classics, than you really don't know what you're missing.

"Like Volume #1, this is a very praiseworthy compilation for anyone without the Motown assortment in his or her collection, at a very good price. All original, no maddening re-takes.
