So I was surprised to hear a marimba among the other instruments. I prefer the heavy bass of the bajo sexto and big brass sound, especially those hard-to-reach notes that make me feel so involved in the music. But I grew up hearing many different types of Mexican music, and I recognized this sound as the type popular with my parents, pleasant but not overwhelming, good to dance to more than listen and sing along with."
