Sean Potts, a co-founder of the Chieftains, his son Sean Og Potts and current Chieftains Kevin Conneff and Derek Bell are just four of the 14 Irish folk musicians who each contributed an unaccompanied slow air to this album, a non-partisan musical memorial for those who have died from the "troubles" in Northern Ireland. There's a long tradition in Irish music of sorrowful songs and mournful tunes, and that legacy is charged anew by the personal connection of most Irish families to the violence in the North. The anguish of these stark solo performances is balanced only by their grave dignity. Highlights include Christy Moore's eerie, radical reinterpretation of "Danny Boy," Micheal O Suilleabhain's tender piano version of O'Carolan's "Plunkett," and Bell's eloquently weary rendition of "O'Carolan's Farewell." --Geoffrey Himes

"Forget about U2, Sinead and the likes. This is what Irish blues is all about. This CD features various artists performing heartbreaking traditionals with a minimal but inspiring approach. Often, only one instrument(and a voice)can be heard. You hear flutes, bagpipes, violins and a piano passing by. One of the most remarkable tracks on the album is a remake of the traditional Danny Boy. It's thanks to Peter Gabriel that this wonderful music is available. Don't play this album too often for it is 100% melancholy."

"Lament has been helping us get through these bad times. The beautiful haunting bagpipe numbers make me think of the fallen heroes of the WTC disaster. "One Breath", a beautiful 45-second acapella howl of pain and mourning expresses more than any lyrics or melody could.
Lament is beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking music."
