"A great field recording (crickets are included) on the first side. The music alternates with the sermons and both are in a "primitive" style that is not much seen anymore. The emotional directness of these services is very powerful and is a window into a much earlier time in Protestant Christianity. This is not your tele-evangelist "old time religion", this is the real thing.This recording has nice examples of "lining-out". The second side has lots of interesting examples of white spirituals. The extensive liner notes by Alan Lomax are a must-read."

Great gospel from the pews rather than the stage

This is not gospel music made for money. These songs were recorded during services at Appalachian churches, and their singers do not sing for a living, which is what makes The Gospel Ship such a moving experience"
