"Fifty Years of Country Music from Mercury"
(Mercury Records)
-------------------------------------------------
This is a great 3-CD overview of the country music recorded by the Mercury label in the 1940s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and early '90s. The first two discs are packed with real gems: Mercury was never as powerful a label as, say, Capitol or Columbia. Indeed, during the early years, at least as far as country music went, Mercury was practically an indie label, and many of these artists remain pretty obscure to this day. Also, a lot of these recordings are pretty rugged and up-tempo, the kind of honky-tonk country that fed into rockabilly in the early 'Fifties. I think this is a great collection -- fans of classic, old-school country will want to check it out! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Country Music)"
