CD Reviews

"Escalator of Life" by Robert Hazard
04/03/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This compilation CD includes Robert Hazard's obscure, but classic, song "Escalator of Life". That alone makes this great collection of new wave songs worth owning."
Buy this if you're a true child of the 80's

"There are some songs on this disk which, if you're like me, you'll have about a thousand copies of. "Come On Eileen" comes to mind as a oft-repeated compilation staple. And some of the tracks are just weird selections, like "Kath." But Heaven 17's neo-industrial "Fascist Groove Thang," and OXO's ultra-danceable "Whirly Girl" rate high on the "Oh yeah, I remember that" scale, where other compilations are satisfied to pump out one "Big 80's" groaner (like Toni Basil's contemptible but ubitquitous "Mickey") after another. Particularly commendable is Rhino's inclusion of Missing Persons' "Walkin' in L.A.," a solid reminder that you could be new wave and still rock. Provocatively-clad Missing Persons' lead singer Dale Bozzio's oddball delivery layered over a sharp guitar riff and a pounding drum beat (not even a machine, even!) make this a high-decibel driving song. Also notable in pleasant obscurity: Mental as Anything's cheerfully mournful "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?" Rhino's liner notes are, as always, fabulous. A very good CD overall."
I found my favorite song!!

"I've been looking for the song "Kiss Me" from Tin Tin. It's about itme someone re-released it."
