CD Reviews

One of the best metal compilations available

"Judging from the corny cover art, you would think this is another hair band compilation, but Double shot of metal goes beyond the glam rock and offers some all-out rockers to please the true metal fan. Pantera's Walk is a great way to open a CD, and the tracks from Sepultura, Anthrax, Metal Church and Armored Saint all rock hard. What makes this compilation unique is that it includes metal gems from 1972 to 1999. Most metal compilations contain the same played-out radio hits from the 80s, but on this double CD set, you get classics from Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Motorhead, some thrash ,some glam and some straight ahead metal (like Black Sabbath and Dio). The two tracks from lesser know bands Virgos Merlot and New American shame are surprisingly solid songs and add some new sounds to the collection. Just about every compilation has a few tracks that don't fit, and this one has only one or two (White Lion's "Wait" and Faster Pussycat's "House of Pain). Who's in the mood for White Lion after listening to Sepultura? Never the less, you won't find this many killer metal songs on one collection for the price. The sound quality is great, too."
The Joy of Discount Music

"When you're digging through the "DISCOUNT MUSIC FIVE BUCKS AND UNDER!!!" bin at the store of your choice, you really don't expect to find much more than generic, re-record cover compilations of old 60's music. Even if by God you DO find something under 20 years old, it's still going to be all covers, re-sung by some no name kids in Nashville. But one day I discovered K-Tel records. My first experience with them was this album. A double album, and not a double album price! Oh my God! It's the original recordings! And in good condition, too. These aren't like the discount "Power Sound 2001" Black Sabbath CDs that are floating about stores nation wide, that obviously were de-mastered from somebody's worn out 8-track. This is a high quality disc! This is a booty-kickin album. Although I think the order of the songs could have been re-aranged to better suit the listener, it's still excelent. DIO is on there, man! Dio rules! They did an EXCELENT job of picking hard rock hits from all over, rather than just throwing together a "Who's Who in Aquanet Land" album. The cover was distasteful. I keep mine turned inside-out."
