Synopsis

Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul, one of the most popular self-help spirituality books in the 1990s, and now Rhino Records has extended the concept to a series of seven discs for the soul. As collections go, this 14-song set has a wide but not always inspired reach: Mahalia Jackson, Judy Garland, Perry Como, Andy Williams, and other contemporary artists such as the Roches (singing "The Hallelujah Chorus"), Brook Benton, and Johnny Mathis. Sixties star Jackie Wilson delivers "O Holy Night (Cantique de Noel)," although his classic "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher)" would have been the more sumptuous choice. Gene Autry weighs in with "Rudolph" in one of the collection's oddest choices, while Harry Belafonte and the Harry Simeone Chorale and Orchestra add more seasonal good tidings to the soup. God knows whether this will cure your spiritual woes at Christmas, but it's atmospheric enough to put your mind right. --Martin Keller

A Good Collection of Christmas Favorites
10/25/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you love holiday music from classics such as Bing Crosby and Judy Garland then you will like this CD. It's a great collection of Christmas songs that is to be enjoyed throughout the holiday season."
A great selection of classic carols by classic artists
Bryan D. Costin | Westminster, MD United States | 11/30/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"You won't find any bland elevator-style music among these performances. Some are the definitive performances that we all have a soft spot for (like Gene Autry's "Rudolph"), and some may be a little less familiar but still beautifully performed (like the stirring "Silent Night" rendition by Mahalia Jackson). Some Christmas music you leave on in the background--this one you'll want to turn up and enjoy."
