Cumbias y baladas

(4 out of 5 stars)
"This compilation of Colombian oldies has a mix of lovely ballads and upbeat cumbias, with a variety of performers.
Tracks 1-10 are slow love songs, some with orchestral backing, and some with the more traditional guitar accompaniment.
the performers in this section are: Obdulio y Julian (tracks # 1 and 10), Lucho Garcia (track # 2), Los Hermanos Martinez (tracks # 3, 7 & 9), Trio Martino (track # 4), Los Medicos (track # 5), Lucho Ramirez (track # 6) and Alby (track # 8).
Tracks 11-19 are good dance cumbias, and some of them are quite irresistible, and will urge your feet to dance the cumbia even if you don't know the steps, like the effervescent "El Año Viejo" which is my favorite piece on the CD.
Performers for this section are: Orquesta de Luis Uribe Bueno (# 1), Corraleja de Colombia (# 2), Sarita Lascarro (# 3), Bovea y sus Vallenatos (# 4), Jaime Llano Gonzales (# 5), Alberto Fernandez (# 6), Edmundo Arias y su Orquestra (# 7), Luis Black Stars (# 18), and Orquesta Sonolux (# 19).
Track # 20 is a pasodoble, and a nifty one, by Orquesta Italian Jazz.
The sound on these songs is either rather old, or recorded under primitive conditions, but doesn't diminish the quality of the music, especially the second half of the program, which if you feel like dancing will do nicely; it's one of those CDs that is a pleasant surprise when you find it for a rock bottom price. Total playing time is 56'57.
