CD Reviews

"one of a kind composer of our century"
J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 05/08/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Burt Bacharach is one of those composers you just can't help like, even when you hear a tune and never realize it is one of his. What a legacy of pop music this gentleman has left us, and he's still going strong. Thanks to the Austin Powers craze, we've rediscovered that "old magic" Bacharach generates, a master blend of emotion and musical genius. Burt's body of work is so impressive, it's almost difficult to define with the exception it is "pure melody" and lingering. Our friends at Hip-O Records gathered the best possible compilation from this one of a kind composer of our century - beginning with "RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD" (track one) to the final track (seventeen) "THE BEST OF TIMES", both titles performed by Bacharach himself. As usual, I have my stand outs - "THE LOOK OF LOVE" (Dusty Springfield) - "THE APRIL FOOLS" (Marvin Hamlisch) - "A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME" (Burt Bacharach) - "CASINO ROYAL" (Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass) and "MADE IN PARIS" (Trini Lopez) remember him? Also a highlight - "THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE" (Gene Pitney) a John Ford film (1962), with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and oh yes, Lee Marvin as Liberty Valance, the song was never included in the film, but was a Big, Big Bacharach hit. Many selections are not found too easily, which makes this album very collectable. Hip-O Records has given us an outstanding CD once again to enjoy, from a man who is an American treasure - Mr. Burt Bacharach!Total Time: 56:54 on 17 Tracks/ Hip-O Records - HIPD 64566 (1999)"
Nice Enough Collection But Where's The Rest?
DL Minor | Chicago, IL USA | 03/24/2009

"Is it just me or does anyone else here get the feeling that Bacharach, David and company are determined to distance themselves from a trashy 1971 flick (adapted from a trashy Jacqueline Susann novel) called "The Love Machine"? Unless there are complicated legalities involved, it sure seems that way--to date I can find neither a CD version of the Bacharach-David soundtrack nor any MP3 tracks from it on any of the seemingly endless Bacharach/Warwick comps and collections, even though former muse Dionne had two modest hits with the arch, rueful "He's Moving On (Love Theme)" and the tender, sublime "Amanda."

What gives?? Okay, okay--"The Love Machine" was a bad movie. A really bad movie. A really, really, really, hilariously bad movie. But the Bacharach-David music composed for it was/is terrific, especially the aforementioned Warwick vocals. So why won't A&M--or someone--re-issue the album on disc?

C'mon already!!"
Very special indeed! This cd is a keeper!
