Synopsis

The young pianist Olli Mustonen relies on exaggerated articulation in this collection of little-known Beethoven--a very interesting program. Is Mustonen trying to duplicate the sound of a fortepiano? (If so, he should have used one.) Or is he just trying out new effects at the keyboard? But the results of this playing style have to be heard to be disbelieved. It takes your attention away from the music and focuses it firmly on the pianist, which may well be his idea. --Leslie Gerber

CD Reviews

Colorful
12/29/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I find this interpretation actually quite colorful and entertaining, really. These are dances! These are variations and bagatelles; alone their mere titles would suggest a rather, say, improvised approach rather than mechanical following of tempi and notes in a sense of "how the composer would have wanted it".I wouldn't recommend this style for pieces like the moonlight sonata, but here, why not. A much needed fresh wind so to speak. Some of the shortest 68.43 min I ever had."
