"...On their album, the Austrian band Vanitas can convince the listener with their individual style, placed somewhere between Gothic, Death, Black and Melodic Metal, included also parts of traditional Metal and even classical music. All together makes the music of Vanitas really exciting. Fast and furious parts alternate with sad and beautiful melodies as well as aggressive Growls. Further a soprano enriches the music with her enchanting voice.
The band interprets the Vanitas theme of the baroque time and to transfer it to lyric's and music. The idea of Vanitas shows up that death isn't anything to worry about on the one side and on the other the conviction that life is short and transitory. Atmospherically the band tries to let
These contrasts flow into their music. The musicians interpret the Vanitas theme according to their own temperaments and traditions, like the former artists of the 17th century.
Therefore you shouldn't reckon without a typical baroque music influenced band, because the music persuades especially with its own, individual style. The bands concept - the already mentioned close relation to the baroque art - clarifies itself again and again in the use of more quiet and nearly "happy" passages, which show again music's power to express the ansitoriness of life. All songs derive their particular impact from their astonishing dichotomy
between words and music. The apparent contradiction between catchy melodies and oppressive, sad lyric's about longing for death becomes obvious. But one who believes being accustomed to this contrast, will be surprised by another atmosphere change, both on text and on musical level. So you find an album full of contrasts, which is fascinating because of its unbalanced extreme sublimes harmonies.
Beside the steady dread of death, the greed for life develops. - Beside the longing for death consists the approval of living. One can recognise the fear of the world on the one and the fear of release and eternity on the other side. VANITAS surprise the listener with an antithetic mood and show the affinity of baroque to presence."
