Great sets

"Nowadays you don't have to be lucky to get a Free Jazz volume included with your Vandermark 5 CD, you just have to be lucky enough to hear about the Free Jazz series and then buy it. Volume 3 is a live set devoted to the songs of Sonny Rollins when he was (in the eyes of Ken Vandermark) pushing the boundaries of jazz outward. The songs are pretty strong, and the Vandermark 5 bring their high-intensity playing to most of them. There are a few lagging moments on Vol 3, like on John S and the Alfie suite. Volume 4 is a live set devoted to the songs of Rahsaan Roland Kirk and his different facets of songwriting. The songs and performances are strong throughout, and the CD is a lot of fun to listen to. Even if you didn't get both CD's for not much more than the price of one (or less than the price of some CDs), this set is highly recommended.
