John Foxx's Ultravox! (the version of the band with the exclamation point - not to be confused with the watered down Midge Ure version that came later) were masters of melding the visceral energy of punk with the atmospherics of Eno. This album is incredibly special in that way; there isn't another thing out there quite like it. The stark cold feeling within tracks like "The Artificial Life", and "Distant Smile" is SO stark and SO cold that it can only be described as deeply soulful. "Hiroshima Mon Amour" can only be described as a tone poem, not unlike Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun". Haunting." |
