Los Tucanes became a norteño phenomenon in the mid-1990s through a combination of fresh song material, crisp musicianship, and a clean youthful sound that impacted with young generations of Mexicans and Mexican Americans. This CD was recorded just as the band's popularity was taking off. The musical magic is obvious in tunes like the title track, where singer-bandleader Mario Quintero delivers honeyed vocals on true love; or "Empinando el Codo," a humorous huapango about the simple life. Los Tucanes' reputation for explicit narcocorridos (story-songs of druglords) was soon to become part of their mystique, and their penchant for dark tales is evident on the despondent "Seis Pies Boca Abajo." But this song is balanced with the facetious "Gordito Country." --Ramiro Burr
