CD Reviews

Truly amazing

"This band is (in my opinion, I could be wrong) very original, and took me a little while to get used to. I saw them live with mindless self indulgence (if you don't like mindless self indulgence, you lack a sense of humor/irony, and can die), and they blew me away. They were a perfect opener for MSI, and the crowd loved them. But, to the album. The songs are very short, with the exception of a few, so the experience isn't long. But this album isn't about quantity, it's about quality, and there's TONS of that. I can't say that I like every song on the album, there are a few near the end that aren't the greatest, but as an album, it's stellar. Favorites: faster, she's the pro, numbers, bite the wax tadpole, Bernard's three awakenings"

"I enjoyed Tub Ring for a long time only knowing the album Zoo Hypothesis. It's true that they would not exist without Mr. Bungle, but they are one of the very few to take the Bungle influence in a good direction.

Drake Equation is an incredible album, especially considering that it was their first. The lyrics are all really interesting, the keyboards are used tastefully, and the album displays incredible musicianship. The songs are all original (well, the song "Numbers" is pretty similar to Bungle's "Vanity Fair"), yet Tub Ring had a clear direction for the album and it all holds together well. Even being so energetic, youthful, and sometimes a little silly, the album maintains a strong level of maturity. The band handles every genre that they cross very well.

The last two songs on the album lack some relevance, and seem to have been skimped on in terms of effort or originality, but compared to the alternatives to listening to this album, Tub Ring keeps it together perfectly. At about six years old, the album's sound quality seems a little weak and some of the busier pieces lose some clarity, but after the first few listens, those things became important personality traits.

Not just a blatant Mr. Bungle rip-off like Dog Fashion Disco or an annoying keyboard-crazy-rock mess like Mindless Self Indulgence, Tub Ring is a very important modern band and they are holding on tight to the dream of creating good and original music, so you really should buy this album."
