It's amazing when you consider that the world's greatest trumpet concerto was composed in 1796. The truth is, we're lucky Haydn's manuscript survived at all. The only reason he wrote the piece in the first place was because of the invention of a keyed trumpet that permitted the full range of notes to be played on the instrument for the very first time. But trumpet concertos don't really interest modern composers to any large degree because of the expressive limitations of the instrument itself. During the Baroque and Classical periods, composers basically took the trumpet and did everything they could with it. As this excellently played disc proves, it was quite a lot. -- David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Great CD!
D. Jack Elliot | 05/24/1999

"These are good performances. I think that the performance of Hummel is better then Wynton's. Also unlike the Amazon.Com reviewer says there is lots of modern works for trumpet, and the instrument doesn't have "expressive limitations""
Review of Hurwitz review

"I am amazed that David Hurwitz has listened to this or many other trumpet pieces. Based on a statement like this: "..the expressive limitations of the instrument itself", he must have missed some great listening opportunities.

Are you kidding? The list of expressive trumpeters is very long, and the trumpet crosses many musical genres.

The best Hummel reading I know
D. Jack Elliot | Omaha, Nebraska | 07/13/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Once as I was driving I turned on the radio and caught this performance of the Hummel concerto just after the opening chords; so I didn't know who was performing it. I found the reading so gripping, so expressive that I sat in a parking lot for ten mintues and was late for my appointment so that I could find out who it was. This is a work with which I'm thoroughly familiar and of which I own ten or fifteen different recordings, and this is by a comfortable margin the best of them... better even than Gerard Schwarz's great performance. The reading of the Haydn here is pretty bland, and the other works are played well but are rather incidental pieces, not of particular interest except to trumpet players. But buy this album for the Hummel concerto. Highly recommended."
