CD Reviews

Nice Jewish girl reviews Christmas album in September!

"{OK, this is NOT just my opinion. This album has been nominated for a Grammy, so it must be pretty darn good!}

Not sure exactly how to rate this against other Christmas music, because I do not own any other Christmas music! Compared to what I hear on the radio, however, this is head and shoulders (pardon the pun, Ezra) above most of what is out there already.

It has that toe-tapping Trout beat, plus the usual witty sense of humor. It is laugh-out-loud funny in many places as well as being tender and sweet in other places. It is also an extremely polished sound. They seem to be getting better and better.

It is definitely made for the whole family to enjoy together. Three generations of this family loved it.

I think some of these may become perennial favorites as the years go on. I hope they get lots of exposure. I Got a Cheese Log is a classic!! (-:

Not one boring or trite song in the bunch (although the Eleven Cats of Christmas might drive parents a little nuts-in a good way. I think it's meant to! Which means, of course, that kids love it and have great fun trying to remember the names of all the cats!)

I actually had a tear in my eye a couple of times- Snow is Falling is a really sweet little song about sharing special moments with your child and savoring them. A love and respect for children shines through in this song. The Christmas Letter contains a beautiful line about children "Looking to the future while I'm still clinging to the past." aaahhh.

One of the funniest songs is definitely My First Christmas, which has very clever lyrics. As with many of their songs, the words are as important as the music and if you listen carefully, you will be in for a treat.

If you want to hear a good example of their outstanding musicianship, You Gotta Get Up is a great one. They make those instruments sing. Such a full, vibrant sound.

Buy it, spice up your Christmas. Give it to people instead of stinky cheese logs.

[BTW- listen to Bob and Bob, Troutmusic is a great website. lots of cool CDs and clothing (which Bob and Bob will sign if you ask them nicely) and not one stinky cheese log.]

I got a cheese log!

"This is a terrific album by a folk music duo. At least they are ostensibly a folk duo. Many of the songs here have accompaniment from additional musicians and have more of a rock or jazz feel to them. This album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children's Album. And while it is indeed an album that can be enjoyed by children, it is also quite enjoyable for adults too. In fact, some of the songs here have lyrics that are a bit too sophisticated to be really appreciated by children. Most of the songs are humorous, but there are a few songs that are played "straight". To sum it up, this is a fun Christmas album that can be enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart."
