CD Reviews

Don't let her ravishing beauty fool you...
Sharon O'Brien | New York , NY | 02/17/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was mesmerized by the freshness Trisha brings to this wonderful collection of songs. Backed by a stellar band, the beautiful, smooth, easy and relaxed manner she evokes in songs like "If I should lose you" and "In the wee small hours of the morning" took my breath away. I am sure anyone listening to this CD will find Trisha's voice a sheer delight!!"
Cool, thoughtful vocals, great arrangements and a hot band!

"Trisha O'Brien has a cool sound: as in groovy, for one interpretation, and also unruffled. Her beautiful, melodic vocals are unencumbered by emotional histrionics: she tells you the story really simply and honestly. Trisha's silky voice is a perfect combination with Shelly Berg's totally A-list arrangements. The combination makes me want to hear an album of Bossa Nova's from O'Brien with Berg! The rest of the band is enviable, too: Lewis Nash and Peter Washington complete the rhythm section, and Ken Peplowski makes an appearance on sax. This is an elegant, unique CD."
A perfect blend of a silky voice with a great band!

"I had a good feeling that I'd like this CD before even putting it in my CD player. The fact that jazz pianist Shelly Berg was listed on the package as leading the four piece group accompanying Ms. O'Brien was a sure sign of top-notch arrangements and performance.

I was not disappointed when O'Brien - who I knew nothing about previously - begain to sing the opening track. Her cabaret style singing is smooth and silky and yet she can swing with the band on standards like "' Deed I Do". In fact, if there is any downside to the album it's that there are too many standards that seem to be on every Cd of the American Popular Songbook. The only oddball song is Joni Mitchell's "Help Me".

But back to the positives. First off, there's a generous helping of songs with 14 tracks including one two-song medley (making the song count 15). And nearly all the songs stretch out to over four minutes - a few exceed five - allowing Berg and the other musicians (Peter Washington on bass; Lewis Nash on drums; Ken Peplowski) to take some nice solos before we are back to O'Brien's dreamy vocals.

This is certainly an album you can play in the background when friends are over for dinner and someone is sure to ask, "Who is that woman singing?". They won't recognize her name, just like I didn't, but they'll probably comment: "She does have a nice voice, and I like the piano too.".

If you like CDs by Michael Feinstein, you'll certainly enjoy the female vocal versions of the songs.
