CD Reviews

Excellent performances of Rach's piano trios
John R. Blackburn Jr. | Santa Clara, CA USA | 01/15/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In my opinion, these are the best recorded versions of Rachmaninov's two Trio Elegiaques available today. The Bekova Sisters give us superlative performances of these two challenging pieces, providing an expertly balanced interplay between violin, cello, and piano that is filled with great nuance and heartfelt passion. For those who think Rachmaninov only wrote melody-laden piano concertos, these trios are further proof of his genius at composing great chamber music. Check out his cello sonata for further proof."
A glorious surprise

"I can't remember the year, but it must have been in the very early eighties...I saw a tiny ad in a Vancouver paper for the Bekova Sisters - a concert to be given that week in a small, local theatre. Never having heard of them, but in love with chamber music, I bought two tickets. My husband and I were one of ten people in the audience: this was the first visit of three "unknown" sister musicians from far, far away. The moment they drifted onstage, they caught us in what I can only describe as the essence of fairy tale, and held us there through a transcendent experience.

What else can I say? That good fortune smiled on me when I saw the ad? All ten of us, utterly enraptured with these three charming, gifted creatures, not only wept half the time, but stomped and screamed with applause as if we were a hundred. I still have the CD I bought that night - the very one, "discontinued", still available from a few sellers. DO NOT HESITATE - buy it. Of all the groups who've played Rachmaninov's trios, none, in my opinion, has brought out the deep, spiritual warmth of this composer, so close to the hearts of the Bekova Muses. "Special" is the only word that serves me right now. This is what I call "true" musicianship."
