"This album made the great Italian composer Toto Cutugno a singing sensation. He was already famous everywhere in Europe for the songs that he wrote for Joe Dassin and Adriano Celentano. But he did not sing much himself until 1983, except songs like "Donna, Donna Mia," written, I think in 1976. His voice, many thought, was to raspy to make him a significant singer in his own right. But when he wrote and sang L'Italiano at San Remo, the crowd got to its feet and wildly applauded. Toto Cutugno thus became a significant on stage performer, whose songs were irresistable in Italy and in Eastern Europe in the 1980s."
