One of the most popular and enduring groups in Jamaica's illustrious musical history, The Maytals embarked on their recording career in 1963, swiftly making their mark as one of the island's leading vocal acts with a series of hit singles for Coxsone Dodd. The trio of Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert, Nathaniel 'Gerry' McCarthy and Henry 'Raleigh' Gordon subsequently worked with a number of local producers before signing to Leslie Kong's Beverley's label towards the close of 1967. Over the years that followed, the group repeatedly re-affirmed their status as major hit-makers, enjoying their international breakthrough in 1969 with `Monkey Man' and continuing to set the charts alight for years to come.
