I'd long been a fan of apocalyptic-folk groups (Current 93, Death in June, et al.), but had resisted Sol Invictus and other Tony Wakeford-related projects because I wasn't sure I liked his voice. Like David Tibet's twee vocal musings, Wakeford's unsteady warbling is an acquired taste, and I guess I've finally acquired the taste. And anyway, the music and lyrics are beyond reproach, particularly on "A Rose in Hell" and "Heaven & Hell." Stunning inside-jacket artwork by the peerless Tor Lundvall rounds out a gem of a release."
