Synopsis

Product Description
Powerhouse Records announces a March 3, 2008, release date for Raising the Roof, the new album from guitarist extraordinaire Tom Principato and his band
Long-acknowledged as one of the premier guitarists in the world, Tom Principato s latest CD builds on the universal acclaim for his 2005 release, Guitar Gumbo, which won awards from the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) for Best Blues Recording and Best Blues Vocalist. With these new honors, Tom has now won a total of 22 Wammies. In addition, a song from that album, If Love Is Blind, written by Dave Kitchen, was named Song of the Year.
In addition to Principato on guitar and vocals, the band features John Perry on bass and backup vocals, Joe Wells on drums and Josh Howell on congas and percussion.
On Raising the Roof, the Tom Principato Band is joined by long-time DC-area favorite Tommy Lepson, who contributes his soulful Hammond B3 organ playing and vocals, as well as several other special guests. The new album showcases nine songs (including 6 originals) that demonstrate the breadth of Tom s musical influences ranging from blues, jazz and rock, to funk, reggae and New Orleans sounds.
The three covers include a jazzy workout of Jimmy Smith s 8 Counts for Rita, a cooking take on J.J. Cale s Lies, and a new version of Louis Jordan s Fish Fry that brings on the funk and Jamaican flavors to this R&B classic, a long-time staple of the band s live shows.

CD Reviews

A real gem of modern blues-rock

"I saw Tom perform live in Baltimore, and the show was absolutely amazing. He is a master guitarist and singer without a doubt, and it's certainly comforting that the blues keep thriving in his capable hands. He played a few tunes from this CD (and he has another CD coming out in about 6 months, he said), and I just had to buy it.

The music is varied, not really what you'd call a purist's blues, which I see as a positive thing. Seriously, how many versions of the "Little Red Rooster" and "Crossroads" already exist? Instead, Tom delves into original compositions for most of this CD, and the result is superbly refreshing. He plays rocking blues, with thoroughly modern musical concepts and original chords, which make his solos very purposeful and expressive - not merely guitar noise. Very melodic.

One of my favorite tunes is "Lies", which he played live. It sorts of reminds of the Allman Brothers brand of the blues. Tom is a convincing vocalist, projecting a gruff and meaty tone that's also bright enough to cut through the music when he forces it. Guitar work is so tasty, it cooks in a very soulful yet rocking flavor.

All the songs are superb on this CD. They have an undeniable sense of rhythm and drive and are just a fun listen any time of day, and especially on the road! While the music is blues, it just isn't gut-wrenching or sad at any time - it's a great pick for a CD when you're on the road or doing some project at home.

I just discovered Tom's music and will be digging deeper. He's a superb musician with great attitude, a gentleman, and he's got an excellent band that lets him work his magic while they work theirs."
I love cruisin' with this CD!

"This collection of songs contains some great jams by a really good group of musicians. I enjoy it from beginning to end! It kind of sounds like Santana jammin' with the Allman Brothers at times."
