Why can't every Sunday worship service sound like this? Recorded live at James Temple in Cincinnati, Reverend Timothy Wright leads the B/J Mass Choir through a rollicking and rolling hour of gospel glory. When Wright isn't lifting the roof off the house with testimonials like "You Are My Everything" and "Give You the Glory," he's moving you off those church pews with the funky grooves of "Been There Done That" and "Don't Believe He Brought Me This Far." With powerhouse vocals and a spirited backing cast, Wright continues to find new ways to use a gospel choir with his unique arrangements. The Brooklyn, New York, native is etching a mark among the genre's finest talents with releases like this. --Michael Lyttle

CD Reviews

Balm for the soul

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I have long been a fan of gospel and am listening to this CD even more since our nation has come under attack. This CD soothes my soul as the ministers of song offer up praise and thanks to the Almighty. This music returns me to my youth when I was a member of Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. Elder Timothy Wright was a favorite performer then and now. This man has a way with a song that can touch the most jaded heart because he sings the songs of Zion with passion and with conviction. On this set Wright is assisted by Myrna Summers, who he previously teamed up with on the stellar set "We're Going to Make it," back in 1988. She is fantastic on "You Are My Everything," which is broken down into two parts -- the main selection with the soloists and then just the choir. But my favorite selection on this CD is "I Give You Praise," featuring Min. Kirby Brown who I have heard with the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir and Hezekiah Walker throughout the years. This song moves me to tears because it is one of the purest, unabashed expressions of praise that I ever heard. Brown is sending up the praises on this one and exhorts the crowd to do the same with his ad libs "Does anyone here have something to praise God for?" I know my neighbors must be sick of hearing that one song, but it is helping me to make it through these difficult days. May we all find peace of mind during these difficult times."
