CD Reviews

A three course meal of a CD.......
Derek Johnson | United Kingdom | 12/19/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Intimate, funny, emotionally moving, deep, these are all words that come to mind upon hearing this CD. I have had this CD on rotation on my Ipod for a couple of weeks, and here are my thoughts, track by track:

Intro:

Clever and amusing concept as guest artist( and fellow Lamp mode artist) Shai Linne, poses as a rude talk show host, interviewing Tim, as to the nature of the CD. The CD topic is introduced, as is the concept of Killing Sin. Nice production.

Pressing into the Kingdom:

Surely a strong single contender(if Tim does release one) Tim's rhymes here are visualy descripted, as you can picture Tim, on his quest to make it into the kingdom's gate.( A animated video, in the vain of Jeru's da damaja:You can't stop the prophet would also work). One of my favourites toones on the CD.

Power of the Holy Spirit:

Nice use of keyboards, as Tim explains how the spirit helps us to kill the sin within( through Prayer, and reading the word). Very old-school feel with horns thrown into the mix.

The Sinfulness of Sin:

Over a nice piano loop, Tim breaks down what sin is,and how it affects our relationship with the Lord. Deep.

The Temptation:

Another one of my favourites tracks from this CD. How many of us can relate to being in the midst of temptation, contemplating wheather to give in, or call on the Lord for his help. Tim breaks it down using the word as his weapon.

Fix your eyes.

This one has grown on me. Over an acoustic guitar loop, Tim urges the believer to stay rooted in Jesus, no matter what.

Blessings of Obedience:

Over a live instrumentation(I think), Tim lists the pros of obedience to the Lord, as opossed to following sins desires.

The Faithfulness of Christ:

Again, over a live band, Tim extols the christian who has fallen to return to christ, repent, and cling to christ. I find this track very moving(I especially like the sample of the chorus, wouldn,t mind knowing where it orginates!)

The Battle:

Recorded live, this is a concept battle between the christian(Tim) and sin(shai Linne.) The Live feel to this really lifts this track, and the sparring between Tim and Shai is worthy of any great title fight.

The Preciousness of Time

Tim extols the believer to use the time that God has given them to good effect.

Fix your Eyes:

Another one of my favourites. I love to listen to this when I feel down, or need encourgement.

The Humility Of Christ:

Another song I find moving. This details Christs suffering at the cross, and why he went through it(Love for Us!)Another very moving song.

The Excellency of Christ:

A praise song dedicated to christ, finished work on the cross, on our behalf.

Lets Kill sin

An encourgement to deny the flesh, and live for christ.

Step into the Light of Christ.

Tim bravely details his struggle with pornograghy, and how christians and the church can win.

The Excellency of Christ:

A praise song dedicated to christ finished work on the cross, on our behalf.

A very meaty CD, that will challenge your relationship with christ. Highly highly recommend.

Most creative album I've ever heard!

"I am not, and have never been a fan of hip-hop music. This album changed my mind. The theological content is deep, yet illustrated with incredible clarity. I wish I could write as clearly and descriptive as Timothy Brindle rhymes. I put this album in my TOP 3 albums of all-time. That's from someone who is not a hip-hopper. I'm shocked myself.

**It should have been 5 stars. I don't know what happened**

"I have been loving Timothy Brindle's second holy hip hop album Killing Sin, for many months now. You know a cd's gonna be good when it's

* based on mortification of sin making frequent use of John Owen

* Tracklist looks like a collection of Puritan sermons and books including: "Pressing Into the Kingdom" (Edwards), Power of the Holy Spirit (Ryle), Sinfulness of Sin (Venning), Preciousness of time (Edwards)

* Sample John Piper Sermons

* Encourages us to greater holiness by pointing us to Christ

Brindle has given us a great gift in Killing Sin. For 16 tracks, he describes sin as wickedly detestable and Christ as utterly desirable. From Sinfulness of sin: "Sin is any thought that's not morally pure, sin is loving anything else more than the Lord, sin is breaking his laws, breaking his commands, sin is hatred for God, it's blatantly satanic." Sin is revealed for the disgusting thing that it is, often likened to excrement. But Brindle recognizes that revealing sin for what it is is not sufficient. Romans 6 is often referenced, proclaiming that we are to kill sin and not sin because Christ has already freed us from the dominion of sin and made us His slaves to righteousness. So each song is filled with gospel promises. The joy of obedience to Christ is proclaimed as superior pleasure to endulging in sin. Sin is to be fought and we are to press into the kingdom, not by being perfect, but by "rocking [Christ's] righteousness as our banner." The album reveals Brindle's deep knowledge of the Bible's teaching regarding sin, salvation, and sanctification. He effectively takes the heart-changing biblical theology of the Puritans and makes it memorable as he sets it to rhyme and rhythm.

If you are unfamiliar with gospel/holy hip-hop, I recommend you first go get Shai Linne's Atonement and let him preach the gospel to you. And then get Brindle's Killing Sin. I praise God for Timothy Brindle and the effect that this cd has had on me in my battle to kill sin in me:"
