Synopsis

Product Description
Paul Gilson (1865-1942) acquired his knowledge mainly through the study of scores, the Russian school and Wagner's operas made a lasting impression upon him. Gilson had a special affinity for wind instruments, works for wind band, brass band and fanfare are a constant feature throughout his career. La Mer is a musical fantasy with an early Romantic style of instrumentation. Unusual is the addition of a large saxhorn group and a male-voice choir. Both the Andante and the Scherzo (saltando) are based on the classical principle of contrast between dreamy lyrical themes and more rhythmically powerful ones and the repetition of these themes. A short cadenza connects both movements of this strikingly orchestrated work; the woodwinds in particular create soloistic and refined touches of colour. La Captive stands out by virtue of its melodic 'couleur locale' and harmonic diversity, its rhythmic complexity derived from oriental songs and dances and its richly poetic, colourful and dramatic orchestration. Huge resources were called upon: quadruple woodwinds and brass, an extended percussion section, two thunder machines, two harps, piano and strings. Timora Rosler took first prize at the 1996 ''Stuttgart International Cello Competition'' and won the Prize ''Vriendenkrans of the Royal Concertgebouw'' ( 97) in Amsterdam. Timora plays on a Thomas Dodd cello from 1800. The Flemish Radio Orchestra is a modern and flexible symphony orchestra. The orchestra considers it part of its mandate to foster connections with other cultures and communities within the Brussels region and to reach as wide a public as possible. The Buizingen Brass Band is appointed as 'Cultural Ambassadors of Flanders' by the Flemish Government. One of the ensemble's prime objectives is the promotion of first-class original music for brass band by Flemish composers. Martyn Brabbinsis one of Britain's leading and most versatile conducting talents. Following studies in London and Leningrad with Ilya Musin, he won first prize at the 1988 Leeds Competition. He has a close relationship with the Flemish Radio Orchestra.
