The music of Tim O'Brien's Rock in My Shoe neatly defines the artist's considerable range as singer, songwriter, and picker. The album offers soul-flavored bluegrass (a duet with Glenn Zankey on the spirited "Climbin' Up a Mountain"), honky-tonk humor (a rowdy, sing-along string-band version of the Neal McCoy hit, "Small Up and Simple Down"), and pretty ballads (an evocative story about a girl escaping a small town to find the "Edge of the Storm"). Best of all is the catchy Cajun tune about a romantic memory that irritates like a "Rock in My Shoe." All in all, Tim O'Brien straddles the boundary between bluegrass and country better than anyone since the days before Ricky Skaggs got too preachy. --Geoffrey Himes

"ive been somewhat followin this guy ever since i saw him at the Birchmere years ago doin the Hot Rise/Red Knuckles thing. At that time, i deemed him one of the most talented young musicians i had ever seen. i give him credit for exploring his creative talents since, and while i havn't liked everything he has done, this CD IMO is the Tim Obrien i like, at his best. Nice variety, well recorded, there's not a bad cut on there."

"Tim O' Brien is one of the finest pickers-singers-songwriters in folk-bluegrass-celtic music. My favorite songs from "Rock In My Shoe" are "Climbin' Up a Mountain" , "Daddy's on the Roof Again" and "One Girl Cried". If you enjoy good picking, singing or songwriting, you'll find something to like in this outing. Tim, if you read this: You need to get Mark Graham on another recording, its been a while..."
