Synopsis

The latest "discovery" of undiscovered music by one of the most unique and oblique artists of the rock era, Once I Was includes remastered versions of five previously available songs from some 1968 John Peel sessions and two others (including Fred Neil's "Dolphins") from a May 1974 live performance. Drawing on material from various points in his tragically short career, including cuts from 1967's Goodbye and Hello ("Once I Was" and "Hallucinations") and 1969's Happy Sad ("Sing a Song for You"), Tim Buckley weaves his exploratory folk music and stunning vocal range through jazzy interludes and blues-influenced jams. Buckley fans will be mesmerized by the album's culmination, "I Don't Need It to Rain," uncovered in a box of reel-to-reel recordings in Buckley's home. More than a song, it's an eerie 12-minute listening experience, broken up only by the applause at the end. --Scott Holter

CD Reviews

Not my 1st choice for newcomers, but still excellent

"There's been a wonderful glut of Tim Buckley material lately, with more to come (a box set and several books), so newcomers might have a hard time deciding where to dive in. "Once I Was" is a collection of rare live performances from his late funk period and his early troubadour days. The recordings here are excellent overall, and well worth a listen...the vocal acrobatics on the 12-minute long "I don't need it to rain" are fantastic...but if I were to recommend one live Tim Buckley album, it'd still have to be "Dream Letter", the definitive Tim Buckley live set (and, some would add, the definitive Tim Buckley album). Longtime fans shouldn't hesitate to pick this album up, though."

"I've heard every one of Tim Buckley's albums, and along with Dream Letter, this is my favorite. Buckley is an incredibly versatile musician, and his love of experimentation makes his stuff somewhat unpredictable. If I had to recommend one of this amazing singer, truly a unique and incredibly talented voice, it would be this one. Not only does it contain some of his best studio recordings, but it's consistently listenable - wonderfully so. Buckley was obsessed with innovation, so some of his stuff is extraordinary, but on any given album some of it gets very weird... fine if you're a devotee, but not for everyone. At any rate, the man's incredible, there's no one like him, and this, along with Dream Letter, is him at his best. Enjoy!! So glad he came along..."
