The Dawning of a New Day!
TiAja | Vallejo, CA USA | 06/18/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I remember the first time I listened to Miles Davis' anapestic experiment in modal jazz, "Kind of Blue". It was over a friend's house around midnight and "Flamenco Sketches" was undermining the darkness of the room. It was a masterwork then, yet even today, it touches something deep in my soul. If Kind of Blue represents shades of midnight, Till Bonner's, "Oceana" is the dawning of the new day, as it effortlessly ushers in a prism of colors and images. And though not revolutionary, it is most certainly evolutionary. It is the spiritual descendant of Miles Davis and Chet Baker. From Wes Montgomery's, "Bumpin", to Bart Bacharach's, "This Guy's In Love with You", to the hauntingly atmospheric, "A Distant Episode", Oceana is worthy of our undivided attention. Traditional jazz standards such as Jimmy Rowles, "The Peacock's" is treated with clarity of thought and intelligence. "River Man" is sung as a choreopoem in the spirit of Michael Franks or Mark Murphey. Bonner's trumpet colorings here, there, and everywhere, along with his single-minded phrasing, is reminiscent of Miles. Oceana is an absolute must-have for any serious or casual music lover. You will not regret ushering in the new day with Oceana."
