Synopsis

Album Description
The UK´s No. 1 Progressive Metal Export is back with a new masterpiece! Two years on from Critical Mass and after six months of intense writing, recording and producing, Threshold's 7th studio album Subsurface is done. Subsurface is in some respect a continuation of the direction the band started to explore with Critical Mass, yet in many other ways is a brash, audacious step forward. It retains their progressive roots and heavy approach whilst enhancing the accessibility of their overall sound to produce their strongest album yet. From the brooding, all embracing Mission Profile that opens the album, through to the emotionally charged epic Flags and Footprints, the band manage to captivate the listener with their distinct blend of cutting edge progressive metal. The artwork was designed by Thomas Ewerhard whom was responsible for the classic covers of Clone, Hypothetical, Critical Mass and Critical Energy.

Fine progressive rock

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Threshold demonstrates that rock music can be progressive and intelligent, while at the same time powerful and galvanizing. This is a strong, very consistent CD, featuring Threshold's trademark sound. This band has evolved a technique of blending heavy rhythm guitars and keyboards to create a dense musical backdrop. The melodic ideas, although complex at times, are always interesting. The lead guitar includes some catchy riffs and engaging solos. The lyrics are articulate, thoughtful, and often socially conscious. The main contrast between this and Threshold's earlier CDs is that the band has chosen to emphasize their strengths, and translate this into more accessible songs. There are some faster tracks here, like the notable opener, Mission Profile. An exceptionally fine CD -- highly recommended."
