CD Reviews

One of God's most underrated, annointed & inspired musicians

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd takes you through the early eighties and nineties of gospel music when church was "church." The music written by this man of God was simply awesome. This cd will encourage your your walk in the Lord and inspire you to share His goodness with others. There is not a "bad song" or "wasted track" on this cd. It should also be noted that gospel music's current reigning king, Kirk Franklin, views Thomas Whitfield as one of his mentors...and so do I. Be blessed with this project saints!"
Whitfield - The SOG Years

"In a time when its roughly difficult to find vintage albums from gospel artists, albums like "The Unforgettable Years Vol. I" becomes even more valuable and important to music collectors. Min. Whitfield and his pioneering musical aggregation of gospel funk and contempoary gospel, the Whitfield Company, distributed most of their most popular material on the Sound of Gospel (SOG) label during their musical tenure of the late 70s and 80s. And of course the production is mainly poor compared to the live recordings of today. But who can surpass the bonafide artistry of Whitfield on the piano, Rudolph Stanfield's goregous B-3 touches and the Company's powerful angelic performances on tracks such as the funky "God Wants Our Praises" and the rich arrangement of "Never Alone". If you want the other jams like "Hallelujah Anyhow" and "Walk In The Light"...go to "Unforgettable Years II". But this collection is a worthy project for those that need that Maestro reflection. A plus for those that need that vintage Whitfield "greatest hits" album."
Raw Detroit gospel, at its finest.

"The late Minister Thomas Whitfield was an awesome talent in the world of gospel music. In these early recordings from the 80's, it is quite evident that he had a mastery for combining the traditional sounds of the church with a contemporary flair. This is not one of the most "polished" recordings you'll find, not by a long shot. But in a time when many gospel artists are pushing for perfection -- and the message is so sanitized it's almost lost -- the unplugged feel that comes through on these recordings is totally refreshing. Thomas Whitfield always kept it real, but never so much on these recordings; at least, that you'll find on CD. The fact that a good number of these songs were recorded live is a great asset. Even the studio songs have a warm, intimate feel that lets you know love was put into every note.Thomas Whitfield and his music were/are often overlooked by many people in search of powerful music that carries the gospel message. Don't be one of them! Buy this CD, and enjoy the blessing of the pure sounds of the black church."
