(2 out of 5 stars)

"This CD consists of a series of gentle instrumental solos, with no vocals and minimal instrumental back-up to the soloist. It would serve well as simple, soothing background music for a very young child. And, in fact, this CD is identical (same tracks, same instruments, same arrangements) to one released two years earlier, listed separately on Amazon. That earlier Christian CD is also entitled "Heavenly Lullabies", but bears the logo "Baby Blessings" and a drawing of an infant on the cover, emphasizing its intended audience. For very young children, I would rate this CD 4 stars, my only objection being that the arrangements for some of the tracks partially mask the traditional tunes by superimposing the instrumentalist's interpretation.

But by putting artwork by Thomas Kinkade on the cover of this new version, the record label may be conveying the misimpression that his CD is suitable for adults (or, at least, older children). I suspect that most older children and adults who love these tunes would want vocals and/or more robust instrumental backup. Speaking for myself, this adult - who was looking for a children's choir version of "Jesus Loves Me" or a version of "Kumbaya" such as was sung around the campfire - found this CD to be a big disappointment. Unfortunately, the Amazon site does not enable buyers to listen to snippets of the tunes for this CD, so it's impossible to get a feel for the nature of the arrangements before buying it.

I feel compelled to add that it is disingenuous, to say the least, to list Thomas Kinkade as the performing artist for this CD. Kinkade only supplied the cover art (probably for marketing purposes). The actual performers are several instrumentalists, none of whom, I suspect, is Kinkade himself. This music should be attributed to "Various Artists"."
