Four Great Twentieth Century Oboe Concertos!
James Horan | Glasgow, Scotland | 07/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD will prove a valuable addition to the serious music lover's collection.Of importance, is the new version of the Martinu Oboe Concerto, with its restored original third movement cadenzas, and the incorporation of all other smaller details, omitted in the more familiar editions. Furthermore, one would have to search hard for a more brilliant, and technically flawless performance of the biting, and strangely haunting Zimmerman concerto. It is, to date, less well-known than the other works on this disc, but a masterpiece, nevertheless. The oboe is shown in all its facets from supreme virtuosity to fragile utterances. The other two concertos, the Strauss and Vaughan-Williams, are by far the better known, and offer the listener a breadth and warmth of two great composers in their maturity. As a Brit. I have always loved the unashamed pastoral quality of the Vaughan William's concerto; and the soloist on this disc does not disappoint in delivering the necessary heartfelt sincerity of this work. I highly recommend this CD."
