Album Description

For the first time ever, Thelonious Monk's complete trio performance at Newport 1958 (only an edited version of "Blue Monk" with overdubbed announcements had been previously released on the film Jazz on a Summer's Day). This CD also contains Monk's splendid and also unissued quartet concert at the same festival the following year. As a bonus, the only two existing tracks featuring Monk with the Duke Ellington band, recorded at Newport '62 and also appearing here for the first time. 12 tracks. Gambit. 2008.

"Monk is in fine form on this recording, as he is on many other recordings in his vast discography. However, this set is not better than most of his many other live recordings (e.g. Carnegie hall, Town Hall, Monterey, etc., etc., etc.) Unfortunately the sound quality on this set is decidedly poor compared to Monk's other recordings--they sound like they were made with an amateur tape recorder and are poorly miked. The two numbers with Duke Ellington's band in 1962 are interesting and played well, but the sound quality is almost unlistenable. I've heard bootleg recordings that sound much better! Sometimes there are very good reasons why a recording is not released; this CD is a good example why. If he were alive, I am certain Monk would have disapproved of the release of this recording."
