CD Reviews

Say goodbye to the music industry darlings!
Mr. R. Sullivan | Sudbury, Suffolk, UK | 11/20/2001

"With Burning Dorothy as a debut, Thea Gilmore could go any which way. Sugar and Instead Of The Saints blast out like she's the queen of grunge, and yet the acoustic People Like You points her in a much more sedate direction. It doesn't make it any less captivating, mind you, and at just eighteen, writing all these incredible songs herself and releasing them on her own label, she has just so much clout as to knock the whole of the music industry on its rear end. These songs are real growers, feisty and funky, and by no means devoid of feeling - just go to Into The Blue to be sure of that. Thea has a voice fit for both spitting and kissing, despite the barest hint of a wry smile on her face.
And then there's Pontiac To Home Girl.
It's like a thunderous stormy sky before the rain comes, a 747 flying low over an open plain. It is breathtaking.
Don't bother to watch this space, just go and buy everything she's already released and will yet release and enjoy the greatest female singer-songwriter you are ever likely to encounter."
ATTENTION! This is great stuff.

"While sedately listening to satellite radio while working, a song came on that was over and above the general blend. Thank god satellite lists the artist and song so you can take note! Although the song I liked wasn't on this album, I bought it anyway and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. She offers a little bit of everything here and to find out it was her debut at 18? WOW! I can't wait to hear the other albums. My early favorites are "Instead of my Saints", "Throwing In" and "Into the Blue". What a southing voice and great acoustic blending!"
One of Thea's best, along with all her other albums!

"This, her first album (originally released in 1998) is terrific and deserves the same rave reviews you can read here for all her other albums. Great voice, great lyrics, lots of attitude, great music backing up. Yes, most of the songs are bitter, deliciously bitter -- Sugar, Get Out, People Like You, Not So Clever Now, Instead of the Saints, Militia Sister, Bad Idea; so if you like sweet not bitter this is not for you. Every song is strong, right to the final, dreamy Into The Blue. Amazing album for any age -- and she was 18."
