Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
The Detroit-born and -bred Winans brothers Marvin, Carvin, Michael, and Ronald didn't so much bridge as hop over the gap between old-school traditional and new-school contemporary gospel, often taking heat for blurring the lines between the sacred and secular worlds. While some of their work is out of print, or difficult to find, the hour-plus Light Years collection has some of the grooviest, funkiest God-praising tunes from their early-'80s albums Introducing the Winans, Long Time Comin', and Tomorrow. All but one of these bass-laden tracks have the songsmith Reverend Marvin in its favor, and range from tender ("Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay") to Stevie Wonder-inspired R&B ("Restoration") to good-time heavy-handed funk ("If I Labor"). "Tomorrow," penned by Carvin and his sister Deborah, is perhaps not only the group's signature song, but the family's theme prior to the rise of their careers. --Paige La Grone

If Only I Knew The Words . . . .

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I once owned the cassette tape of "Light Years - The Winans," and I played it so much that it "died" -- first it became a string instead of a tape, and then it just broke. :-) This is not just gospel music; it is LIFE music. It's meditation music, it's thought music; it's "what do I do and how do I do it?" music, especially if you're serious about living for Christ. And if you're new to the Christian walk, it's REALLY "what do I do and how do I do it?" music! Many times the funk of the beat seems to MAKE you remember the lyrics because you can't get it out of your head, and that can NEVER hurt! These guys are truly anointed (just listen closely to the lyrics), and the writers in the family (Marvin, Carvin, Debra, among others) write from God's heart and have it goin' on! I've been a follower of the Winans since they burst on the scene, and this collection is a true classic, a must-have for anyone who calls him or herself a "fan" of the Winans. In other words, GET THIS CD!"

"In this Cd you get two of my favorite songs by some of the best Gospal musications out there. If you have just started to listen to Gospal, listen to Restoration and Tommorow. It is moving."
